Alternanthera dentata, conhecida como  perpétua e folha de rubi alternanthera, é uma planta ornamental de crescimento rápido da família amaranto, descrita pela primeira vez por Conrad Moench, e recebeu o nome atual de Stuchlík e Robert Elias Fries. Nativa das Índias Ocidentais e do Brasil, a planta é cultivada principalmente por sua folhagem colorida. É um dos doze sinônimos de Alternanthera brasiliana e tem aparência semelhante à Alternanthera bettzickiana, que todas têm cultivares de aparência surpreendentemente semelhante.
Descrição
Cresce de 60 a 80 cm, a planta herbácea apresenta folhagem pontiaguda de cor bordô com um vermelho rubi radiante na parte traseira e possui um hábito compacto, montanhoso e espalhado. A cultivar popular 'Little Ruby' é mais curta e de cor ligeiramente menos amarronzada, além de possuir folhas menores. A planta apresenta flores escuras e cremosas, semelhantes a pompons, que florescem na primavera e no verão.

Cultivo

Adequado para vasos, pode ser usado como cobertura e como planta contrastante para a folhagem mais leve do jardim. Prosperando em condições úmidas e com tolerância ao calor, a planta se sai melhor em solos bem drenados sob sol pleno a sombra parcial, com um local um pouco sombreado e sem geada no jardim. A planta pode ser facilmente propagada por estacas de caule e enraizar-se facilmente em água pura.

Alternanthera dentata, known as little ruby and ruby leaf alternanthera, is a fast-growing ornamental groundcover plant in the amaranth family which was first described by Conrad Moench, and got its current name from Stuchlík and Robert Elias Fries. Native to the West Indies and Brazil, the plant is chiefly grown for its coloured foliage. It is one of the dozen synonyms of Alternanthera brasiliana, and is alike in appearance with Alternanthera bettzickiana, which all have strikingly similar looking cultivars.
Description
Growing 60 to 80 cm, the herbaceous plant features burgundy-coloured, pointed foliage with a radiant ruby red rearwards and it has a compact, mounding and spreading habit. The popular cultivar 'Little Ruby' is shorter and slightly less brownish in colour, in addition to having smaller leaves as well. The plant features dark creamy, pompom-like flowers, which bloom in spring and summer.

Cultivation
Suited for pots, it may be used as a hedge and as a contrasting plant to the more lighter foliage in the garden. Thriving in humid conditions and has heat tolerance, the plant does best in well drained soil under a full sun to partial shade, with somewhat shaded frost-free location in the garden. The plant can easily be propagated by stem cuttings and would root readily in plain water.
